Election 2011

Coalition win - means a change of faces and names in parliament, not a change of policy and no solution in sight. I predict their first budget is 98% the same as the last NSW Labor state budget. They simply do not have any policies that will reduce the cost of 3 levels of inefficient government in Australia.

2011 NSW Election results and analysis for the seat of Coogee: Nathan Jones

29th March 2011: So far 60% of the vote is counted and I have received 648 votes on first preference. I may reach 1000 votes after all the counting is completed. I am quite satisfied with the result for a number of reasons:

1) I beat two other candidates, both of whom were working full time on the campaign and I was the only candidate to have a full time job and campaigned part time.

2) The total cost of my campaign was only around $1000. If I received a thousand votes then it cost me $1 for each vote. In contrast, the Labor and Liberal campaigns for Coogee were the maximum spend allowed, $100 000. This means they spent $5 and $9 per vote respectively.

3) I also won the most votes per human hour on the campaign. I had far less volunteers than all the other candidates, but the time I put into the campaign produced more votes per hour worked than any other candidate.

Daily blog:

1 day to go until the election.... You have the choice, to let Labor and Liberal dominate again for another 50 years and we will be in the same mess we are in now, just a lot older. Sydney traffic is getting worse and our public transport system is inferior to almost every other city in the developed world.

Collectively Australians pay about $500 billion each year to the 3 levels of government. They waste at least 6% of that ($30 billion each year) on the unnecessary state level of govt. That money should go towards better public services (teachers, doctors, nurses) and new public infrastructure.

The Ferris wheel: Is a great picture of what is happening at the moment in Australian politics. All the state politicians are on a giant Ferris wheel.

The State Labor mob has been enjoying the view at the top of the Ferris wheel for a long time, while the liberals have been waiting their turn at the bottom and middle sections. Soon the liberals will enjoy the view from the top. But the Ferris wheel does not actually go anywhere or benefit anyone who is not on it. Australians just watch in amazement as the politicians on the Ferris wheel yell and scream at each other and tell the public to either give our side or their side some more time at the top of the view.

The people of Australia have not benefited from this Ferris wheel. The Ferris wheel never moves – it only benefits the politicians on it. Lets get rid of state governments in Australia.

    2 days to go

We have 3 levels of government – federal, state and local. We rarely ask ourselves: is 3 layer of government the best form of government for us?

Why because the two major parties (Lab and Lib) hold an amazing 95% of the seats of power across all 3 levels of government in Aust. (Fed, State, Local).

It is in their best interests to not change the system that has worked well for their political party. Given the difficulty of getting 50.1% of the local vote, independents and other parties find it hard to get into parliaments.

But we can and should change our system of government from 3 layers to 2; National and local governments. Firstly it will save $30 billion dollars each year – money that can go directly into much needed infrastructure projects.
